L’Oréal Master Eye Artistry Review

VoxBoxOverview

I have to admit: when it comes to makeup, I’m a bit of a snob. Okay, a huge snob. While there’s a few drugstore products I like, the majority of my makeup collection is a result of blowing budget at Sephora and department store beauty counters. But, whether its from a high-end brand or a super affordable one, makeup is makeup and I’m always excited to try something new – especially when it shows up at my door in a pretty pink box.

This collection of products promises to “Frame. Outline. Impact. Colour” and is a complete eye kit. I received the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer in “Brunette”, the brand’s Super Slim Eyeliner by Infalliable in black, the new Colour Riche La Palette Eye Shadow, as well as the Never Fail Eyeliner by Infalliable, also in black. Rounding out the box was a tube of L’Oréal’s Voluminous mascara in Blackest Black, which I’ve tried a few times before.

L'Oreal Colour Riche La Palette

When I first unboxed the La Palette Nude Intense, I was a little bit skeptical. I’m not typically a fan of purple hues and tend to play it safe by sticking with various shades of brown. But, after trying out a few of the shadows, they definitely proved my philosophy to be misguided. For those of you who, like me, tend to veer away from these types of colours, trust me when I say that the shades are definitely more wearable than they look in the pan.

I love that this palette has several matte colours for daytime wear, and the shimmery satin pans are still pretty wearable. The shadows are definitely highly pigmented, as promised, and the packaging is slim enough for travel with a large mirror in the lid. While it won’t be replacing my everyday Smashbox palette, several of these shades will definitely be worked into regular rotation. And, or just $24, it’s way more affordable than high-end counterparts.

MascaraComparison

Next, I tried out the L’Oreal Voluminous mascara which I was already a huge fan of. This sleek little tube used to be my go-to mascara a while back and have several friends who are also huge fans. I tend to jump from brand to brand though and haven’t quite landed back to this one yet. I’m lucky enough to have long lashes but they’re very light and thin, so dark tints and thick brushes are a necessity. Compared to the one I’m currently using, it works almost as well but for about a quarter of the price.
L'OrealReview

Rounding out the box, there’s the Brow Stylist Definer, the Super Slim Eyeliner, and the Never Fail Eyeliner.

I’m not a huge fan of brow pencils, but this one has a softer texture that doesn’t result in harsh lines. The colour matched well enough (though possibly a shade too light) and the tiny spoolie brush softened the look while taming my brows.

And for the eyeliners? I fell in love with the Super Slim pen as it’s just a sharper version of the L’Oreal Super Liquid Liner I’ve been using for years. As for the Never Fail Eyeliner, I’d be lying if I said I even tried it. I’m not a fan of anything but liquid so this one will be stashed away until I pass it on to eagerly-awaiting sister.

Overall, I was really impressed by the quality, look, and feel of this L’Oreal set and, for the price, would definitely recommend the palette, liquid liner, and mascara.

Easiest Mini Key Lime Pies

One of the highlights of my college experience was a spring break trip to Key West with my roommates. We spent days tanning out on the boat, exploring the sites, attempting the Duval Crawl, and trying every key lime pie we came across. I couldn’t even begin to count how much key lime pie we had on our trip but it had me hooked.

My stepdad happens to love key lime pie even more than I do but, when you’re over 1000 miles north of Florida, it’s pretty darn hard to find. So, for Father’s Day I thought it would be a nice treat to whip some up for him! To avoid getting scolded from my mother for enabling him to eat an entire pie to himself, I individualized the recipe.

Creamy, sweet, and tangy, this recipe couldn’t be easier! These little pretties are perfect for parties or if you have awful self-control like I do! With only 5 ingredients and takes 5 major steps, you’ll be snacking your way to a Key West experience!

Cook Time

Cook Time
22 min
Crust
  1. 150g graham crackers
  2. 5 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled
Filling
  1. 4 egg yolks
  2. 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  3. 1/2 cup key lime juice
Optional
  1. Whipped cream for topping
  2. 1 key lime for garnish
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 325F. In a food processor, crush graham crackers to a fine consistency. With the processor on, slowly stream cooled melted butter into the crushed graham crackers until it incorporates.
  2. Scoop approximately 2 tbsp of the mixture into each muffin tin and pack to the bottom and up the sides (Tip: I used a rounded, 1/4c measuring cup to shape and pack the mixture). Bake for 7 minutes. Let cool.
  3. Once crusts have cooled, mix condensed milk and egg yolks in a medium bowl until well combined. While whisking to avoid curdling, slowly stream lime juice into mixture. Pour filling into the cool crusts.
  4. Bake the pies for 15 minutes and let fully cool. For seamless release from the tins, pop the pan in the freezer for 20 minutes once cool.
  5. Remove the pies from the tin by placing a cutting board on top of the muffin tin, and turn upside down on a solid surface. With hot water, wet a dish towel and wrap around each muffin cup to warm them. Lift both the tin and cutting board beneath it and slam straight down on the counter. Most pies will come out but repeat with hot towel and repeat.
Notes
  1. 14-16 key limes with amount to about 1/2 cup of juice or, if unavailable, use equal parts lemon and lime juice.
  2. Ensure that all filling ingredients are the same, cold temperature.
  3. As an alternative to baking the filling, you can refrigerate overnight to set.

Celebrating Summer in Lilly with Island View

DSC_0006

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for – the first day of summer! It marks the first official day of beach bonfires, patio nights, days on the boat, and long vacations. No one says summer quite like Lilly Pulitzer, making today National Wear Your Lilly Day! Lilly Pulitzer’s loud prints, bright hues, and playful patterns perfectly encapsulate the lively and carefree feelings of summer. Wear Your Lilly Day is the green flag waving in front of my closet, beckoning all of the soft sundresses and summer shifts to come out of hibernation.

In preparation and celebration of one of the most important days of the year, I took a morning to visit my favourite Lilly Pulitzer store, Island View. Located just outside of Toronto in the picturesque downtown of Oakville, Island View’s signature pink and green storefront acts as a beacon for local Lilly lovers. Inside, the bright shop displays all of the new prints for the season in multiple cuts and styles; when you fall in love with a print you get it in everything! Hand-painted sea vignettes border the walls and bright pink inlays shelf the season’s favourite accessories. Lilly stores are all about the little details to create that forever-summer atmosphere and Island View Oakville nails it, right down to the real seashells framing the mirrors and signature prints in the dressing rooms.

I made my rounds – two, just in case I missed something – and brought my haul of favourite prints and styles to my dressing room. I had to resist grabbing everything in the new Red Right Return print and the neon Scuba to Cuba was calling my name.

After trying on all of my picks, my most-loved choice by far was the Janice Shift Dress in Scuba to Cuba. I have this dress in several other prints and it’s so effortless and flattering. If you don’t think classic shift dresses suit your body shape I beg you to try this one on then come back here and thank me later.

I had so much fun shopping the store and dressing up and cannot wait to relive that feeling throughout the summer when I’m wearing my new (and old!) Lilly pieces. So break out your favourite print and celebrate summer and Wear Your Lilly Day! Or, better yet, stop by Island View today, treat yourself to a new favourite and receive a bonus gift with purchase! The fabulous ladies in store are always happy to ship your favourite pieces to you if you’re not local, but still a Canadian Lilly lover. Follow along with Island View on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for new arrivals, updates and promotions.

L’Oreal Fibralogy Review

L'Oreal Fibralogy Review

All too often I swear that I was born in the wrong decade because my love for dramatic, big hair belongs in the 80s. I haven’t owned a hair straightener for the past 10 years and I will jump on any product that promises volume or thicker hair. As you can imagine, when I was sent L’Oreal’s new Fibralogy line of hair care that promises just that, I was enthusiastically ready and willing to put it to the test!

The Fibralogy line uses Filloxane – a thickener gel – that works itself into the hair fibre as a liquid and converts to a solid state which bulks up the follicles from within. L’Oreal says the Folloxane will stay inside the hair for up to 10 shampoos and deliver noticeably thicker hair after 5 applications.

The system consists of an easy 3-step process: shampoo, the thickening booster, and a conditioner. The shampoo seems to be just that – no special boosting formula here but it has a pretty smell and is surprisingly gentle for a drugstore shampoo. The thickening booster stage is where the magic happens. Applied just before conditioning, a dime-sized amount is said to instantly increase inside your hair followed by the conditioner which appears to be fairly standard to me.

So does this stuff actually work?

Now, full disclosure, I am blessed enough to have lucked out with the thick hair gene so I wasn’t expecting to see much of a difference for myself. I was surprised to find that my hair felt much courser and fuller after only a few days of using Fibralogy and there was a significant boost in volume. I continued to use it until each bottle was empty which is a pretty big deal because I’m admittedly a bit of a snob when it comes to my hair products.

Would I recommend? Absolutely! If thickness or volume are at all any of your hair concerns, I would say to give it a try. At such an affordable price point, it’s definitely worth a shot. Well done, L’Oreal!

DIY Druzy Reverse Cuff Bracelet

PostImage

I’m obsessed with the reverse druzy cuff bracelet trend that has been sweeping my Instagram feed over the last few months. Loren Hope has been enticing us with their popular and colourful crystal teardrop cuffs, a few of which are definitely on my wish-list. But, since I am hardly a patient person, I was inspired to make my own in the meantime. This DIY reverse druzy cuff tutorial is fabulously easy and ended up costing only $12 per bracelet!

You’ll need:

DSC_0082 copy

Step One: Put a pea-sized dollop of adhesive on the back of your cabochon. I loved the setting these Bead Gallery sliders are in but the concave back made them a little high-maintenance. They required quite a bit of glue and it dried much slower than if the setting had a flat back.

Step two: Set the druzy cabochon on the edge of your bracelet blank and hold firmly in place until glue begins to dry (about 3-5 minutes). Once the cabochon holds, repeat on the other side of the cuff. Set the cuff aside and allow the glue to dry fully before wearing. DSC_0103watermark

And that’s it! As I said, making your own DIY druzy reverse cuff couldn’t be easier but the results are stunning! These bracelets are perfect for layering and, with the wide selection of colors and shapes of druzy cabochons available, the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating bracelets to fit your style.
